Our Hardyston Township is a large landmass. It used to be much larger but during the quarter millennium that it has been here several towns have been carved out of the township. A usual reason was economics. These “new” towns, like Franklin or Hamburg, had a fairly dense population centered on
business and industry. This was in contrast to the mainly rural and farming nature that had always been Hardyston.
Here are some cemeteries that remain in Hardyston.
- North Hardyston Cemetery. This is by far the largest and is quite active still.
- Willistine Cemetery. This is located just off of Route 23 in the Stockholm section of the
township. - Farber Cemetery. This is a small family plot just east of the road from Stockholm to Vernon.
- Ross Cemetery. This is mainly a family plot, located on a small hill just to the northwest of the Lake Stockholm ball field and off of Rock Lodge Road near the stream that flows from Lake Stockholm to the Pequannock River.
- Stockholm United Methodist Church
All these cemeteries (except for North Hardyston) are volunteer and people are needed to keep them clean and weed free. Some tender loving care is always obvious and there are many hidden faces have a fondness for or a connection with these cemeteries from being near to them or having relatives buried there. These many people would have gratitude for kindly work done by volunteers to keep the sites clear from overgrowth.
I will go into detail on each of these cemeteries in the next few months, there is a lot of history around Hardyston Township for newcomers to hike and enjoy nature alongside the gravestones.
Please let me know if I left any out. And let me know if you want to help with clean ups!
