Walther House 1805 Hardyston Historical

March 2023

Hello fellow Hardyston residents!

My name is Bill Truran and I have been asked to provide some historical facts for our Hardyston Township. I will give some interesting, hopefully, information each month. I am glad to answer questions that you may have.

I grew up in Franklin, later lived in Sparta, and now live in Crystal Springs for the past 15 years. I am an engineer, teacher, author and historian. I am an eager life-long learner. I am the president of the Hardyston Heritage Society and also the Sussex County Historian.

This month we are looking at the Walther house. This house was built in 1805 in the Stockholm section of Hardyston; up on Snufftown Mountain. The Snufftown area at one time was a lively place. With the advent of the Newark Watershed around the turn of the last century much land turned back to forest. The Walthers had a tanning mill with a waterwheel on the Pequannock
River in Snufftown.
